What having a local changes
Understand what you are looking at
That the cheese market is a show, and a good one, but the town behind it is older and stranger than the photographs suggest: the town hall standing alone in the square, the Waag where the weighing actually happened, and the sixteenth-century windows in Sint-Jan that people came from across Europe to see.
See what you would walk past
Most visitors photograph the market and leave. The stained glass is the genuinely remarkable thing here and is easy to skip if nobody tells you why it matters.
Decide what is worth your time
Half of what a guide saves you is a ticket you did not need, or an hour spent on the wrong thing. In Gouda that usually means:
- Whether Gouda is right for your travel day at all — we will say so if it is not
- Whether to come on a Thursday morning in season for the market, or deliberately avoid it
- What is worth doing outside market hours, which is most of the week
- Whether Sint-Jan or Museum Gouda suits your interests better
The cheese market runs Thursday mornings from April to August and the town is much quieter otherwise. Your guide is honest about which version of Gouda you will get.

Local food around the compact centre — it is small enough that everything is a few minutes from the square — and a view on whether to stay or move on.
