Why visit Rotterdam?
Rotterdam is the one Dutch city that does not look Dutch. The bombing of 14 May 1940 flattened the centre; what replaced it, from the 1950s Lijnbaan to Piet Blom’s Cube Houses of 1984, the Erasmusbrug of 1996, the Markthal of 2014 and the mirrored Depot of 2021, is the best concentration of modern architecture in the country.
It is also Europe’s largest port. You cannot see most of it from the centre, but the river, the water taxis, Hotel New York on the old Holland America Line pier and the SS Rotterdam liner give you the scale.
From Amsterdam Centraal it is about an hour by Intercity, with the option of a faster Intercity Direct from Amsterdam Zuid if you are near the south of the city.
Best for
- Architecture: the Cube Houses, Markthal, Depot, Centraal station and the Erasmusbrug
- People who have seen enough gables and want a modern European city
- Families: water taxis, the Euromast, the Markthal food hall, the Maritime Museum harbour
- A long day paired with The Hague or Delft, each under half an hour away

- Anyone who wants an old town: only Delfshaven and the Laurenskerk survived 1940
- Fine-art pilgrims: the Boijmans museum proper is closed until 2030; the Depot shows storage, not a hang
- A short half day: the sights are spread out, and the best of Rotterdam needs the river

Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Rotterdam Centraal take about 60 minutes; intercity from Amsterdam Centraal about every 15 minutes; Intercity Direct from Amsterdam Zuid is faster but needs a supplement. What makes Rotterdam different
Every other city on this site asks you to imagine the seventeenth century. Rotterdam asks you to look at now. That is why it pairs so well with Delft or The Hague on a two-day plan: one day for old Holland, one for new.
Getting around is part of it. The metro crosses under the river in minutes, the water taxi crosses over it, and both are worth doing for their own sake.

Local context
On 14 May 1940 the German air force bombed the centre of Rotterdam to force the Dutch surrender; the old city burned. Only the Laurenskerk and a few outlying districts such as Delfshaven survived. The rebuilding, begun during the war, deliberately did not reconstruct the past.
The port handled 428 million tonnes in 2025 and stretches 42 kilometres to the sea. Container terminals have moved west to Maasvlakte; the old harbours in the city are now housing, museums and moorings.
The Holland America Line carried emigrants from the Wilhelminapier to New York from the 1870s; its headquarters became Hotel New York in 1993, and the district around it, the Kop van Zuid, was rebuilt in the 1990s and 2000s.

June is architecture month and the rooftops open; September brings the port days. The Depot and most museums close on Mondays. The river is best in summer light, but the architecture works in any weather.
