Yes, and it is the day trip that adds the most contrast. Rotterdam is about an hour from Amsterdam Centraal by Intercity, and its rebuilt centre, the bridge, the river and the port give you a Netherlands the canal towns cannot. Plan a full day; the sights are spread out.

Getting there
From Amsterdam Centraal the regular Intercity runs about every fifteen minutes and takes around an hour, with no supplement. If you are staying near Amsterdam Zuid or coming from Schiphol, the Intercity Direct is faster but charges a supplement of about €2–3 on the Schiphol–Rotterdam section, paid at the pillar on the platform. A second-class single from Centraal was about €20 when checked in September 2026.
Rotterdam Centraal is itself a sight. From there, walk twenty minutes east to Blaak for the Laurenskerk, Markthal and Cube Houses, or take the metro two stops. The Erasmusbrug is fifteen minutes further; the Museumpark and the Depot fifteen minutes south-west of the station.
The Depot closes on Mondays; the Markthal, Cube Houses and Euromast are open daily. Water taxis run on demand and are the best way to see the river.

When to go and how long to stay

Tips
- Buy a day ticket for the RET metro and trams if you plan more than two rides.
- Water taxi fares are by zone; the short hops near the Erasmusbrug are cheapest.
- June is the month for architecture: open buildings and rooftops.
- Delft is fifteen minutes away by train if you want old Holland the same day.
Skip Rotterdam if you want gables and canals; go to Delft or Leiden. Skip a Monday if the Depot is your reason.
