Why visit Utrecht?
Utrecht is twenty-seven minutes from Amsterdam Centraal with a train every ten minutes, and it has the thing visitors keep asking for: canals that feel different. The Oudegracht has wharves at water level and cellars under the street that are now terraces and restaurants; nowhere else in the country looks like it.
The Dom Tower, 112 metres and finished in 1382, is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands; its restoration finished in 2024 and it can be climbed on a guided tour. The church nave collapsed in a storm in 1674 and was never rebuilt, so the tower stands apart from the church across a square.
It is also the country’s biggest university city, with Miffy’s creator Dick Bruna, the Rietveld Schröder House of 1924 and a railway museum for the reasons you would expect from the busiest station in the Netherlands.

What makes Utrecht different
Haarlem is Amsterdam’s smaller cousin and Delft is a painting. Utrecht is a medieval church city that became a student city, and the canals are its own invention: dug in the twelfth century, the wharves let goods be carried straight from boats into cellars below the merchants’ houses.
Utrecht Centraal is the busiest station in the Netherlands, with around 180,000 passengers a day, and the reason Utrecht is a natural hub: Gouda, Amersfoort and Arnhem are all within half an hour.

Local context
Utrecht was the religious centre of the northern Netherlands from the seventh century; the Dom was its cathedral. The tower, finished in 1382, was the tallest building in the country for centuries and still is among church towers. On 1 August 1674 a storm brought down the nave, leaving the tower and the choir facing each other across what is now the Domplein.
The Oudegracht was dug in the twelfth century. Because the canal ran below street level, merchants built wharves at the water and cellars under the road; the cellars, or werfkelders, are unique to Utrecht.
Utrecht is a university city of around 70,000 students. Dick Bruna, creator of Miffy, lived and worked here; Gerrit Rietveld built the Schröder House on the eastern edge of the city in 1924.
