Utrecht is the quickest way to see a Dutch city that does not feel like Amsterdam: twenty-seven minutes by direct train every ten minutes, canals a storey below street level, the tallest church tower in the country and a student centre with good terraces. Getting there
Direct Intercity trains leave Amsterdam Centraal every ten minutes and take about twenty-seven minutes. There is nothing to plan; go to the platform. A second-class single was about €10 when checked in September 2026.
Utrecht Centraal opens into the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre; follow the signs for Centrum and you emerge at the Vredenburg, with the Oudegracht two minutes on and the Dom fifteen minutes from the platforms.
The two sights that need booking are the Dom Tower climb (guided, limited numbers) and the Rietveld Schröder House (small groups, timed). Book both online a few days ahead. Museum Speelklok, the Miffy Museum and the Rietveld house are closed on Mondays; the Domkerk and the tower are open year-round.
