Delft or Leiden?
Choose Delft if you want a small, beautiful canal town with a clear story (Vermeer, William of Orange, Delft Blue) and a day that runs itself. Choose Leiden if you like museums, want Rembrandt and the Pilgrims, and prefer a bigger, lived-in city with students on the terraces.
Haarlem or Utrecht?
Choose Haarlem for the least effort and a half day: fifteen minutes by train, a great church on a great square, two good museums and quiet canals that feel like a calmer Amsterdam. Choose Utrecht for contrast: twenty-seven minutes by train, canals a storey below the street, the tallest church tower in the country and a student city that feels nothing like where you are staying..
Rotterdam or The Hague?
Choose Rotterdam for architecture and the port: cube houses, the Markthal, the Erasmusbrug and water taxis on a river the size of a sea lane. Choose The Hague for art and the state: the Mauritshuis with Girl with a Pearl Earring, Escher, Mondrian, the palaces and the beach at Scheveningen.
Delft or The Hague?
You can do both. For history and art it is one of the easiest two-city days from Amsterdam: Delft in the morning for Vermeer’s town, the Markt and the two churches; the fifteen-minute train to The Hague after lunch for Girl with a Pearl Earring at the Mauritshuis and the palaces.

Choose Haarlem if time is short or this is your first trip out of Amsterdam: fifteen minutes by train, a great church on a great square, two good museums, back for dinner. Choose Delft if you want the postcard and the history: an hour away, a canal town small enough to read as one picture, William of Orange and Vermeer.
Leiden or Utrecht?
Choose Leiden if you like museums and quiet: five serious ones within ten minutes of each other, Rembrandt’s birthplace, the Pilgrims, and a centre where visitors are a minority. Choose Utrecht if you want canals unlike Amsterdam’s and a livelier day: wharf cellars at water level, the tallest church tower in the country, a student city that fills its terraces in the evening.
