Choose Delft if you want a small, beautiful canal town with a clear story (Vermeer, William of Orange, Delft Blue) and a day that runs itself. Choose Leiden if you like museums, want Rembrandt and the Pilgrims, and prefer a bigger, lived-in city with students on the terraces. Leiden is closer to Amsterdam (35 minutes against 60) and the two are twenty minutes apart, so a long day can take in both.
These are the two most-asked-about day trips from Amsterdam after Haarlem, and they are more different than their reputations suggest. Both are canal cities in South Holland with a university connection and a great painter born on their streets. From there they diverge.
