Getting there
Direct trains leave Amsterdam Centraal about every fifteen minutes and take around thirty-five minutes; some run via Haarlem, some via Schiphol. A second-class single was about €10–12 when checked in September 2026. Use a contactless bank card or an e-ticket.
Get off at Leiden Centraal. The Beestenmarkt is five minutes on foot; the Rapenburg, the Pieterskerk and the Burcht are all within fifteen minutes of the station. The museums cluster on the Rapenburg and near the station, so there is no dead time.
The important constraint is the day of the week: the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, the Lakenhal, Naturalis and Boerhaave are closed on Mondays. The Hortus and the Burcht are open every day.

When to go and how long to stay

- Choose two museums, not four. Antiquities and the Lakenhal are the usual pair.
- The Hortus and the Academy Building are on the same street; do them together.

- On 3 October the city is a festival; museums close.
Skip Leiden if you want one iconic sight or a small postcard centre; Delft does that better. Skip Mondays if museums are the point.
