Understand what you are looking at
How the university, the Dutch Revolt, Rembrandt’s birthplace and the Pilgrims who sailed from here are the same story told through one small city. Why the hofjes exist at all, and what they say about how the city looked after its own.
See what you would walk past
The courtyards are behind doors that look private and mostly are not. The wall poems are scattered across the centre and easy to walk past without knowing they are there.
Decide what is worth your time
Half of what a guide saves you is a ticket you did not need, or an hour spent on the wrong thing. In Leiden that usually means:
- Which museum actually fits your interests — they are very different from each other
- Which ones will take most of your day, and whether that is what you want
- Whether to walk the canals or spend the time indoors
- Whether Leiden is a half day or a full one for your group
Several museums close on Mondays, and the city is very different during Leidens Ontzet at the start of October. Your guide checks your date.
Leave with a plan for the rest of the day
Where students and residents tend to sit rather than the first terrace you meet, and whether to stay for the evening or move on. Recommendations depend on what you told your guide you like.
Tell your guide what you enjoy — coffee, local food, architecture, markets, independent shops or a good place for drinks — and leave with recommendations shaped around you.

€185 per private group of 1–4 for 2 hours; €20 per extra person up to 6. Three hours €255. Train tickets, admissions and food are not included. You get a confirmed price by email before you decide.

- Are museum tickets included?
- No. The walk stays outside; your guide points you to the museum worth your afternoon. Admission is paid on the day.
- Can the guide meet us at Schiphol or Amsterdam?
- No. Guides live locally and meet you in Leiden; that is what keeps the price sensible. Leiden Centraal is about fifteen minutes from Schiphol and thirty-five from Amsterdam Centraal.
