What two hours with a local changes

  • Finding the spot on the Weddesteeg where Rembrandt was born in 1606, then the Latin School he walked to, on the way to the Rapenburg.
  • Understanding why a town that survived a siege in 1574 asked for a university rather than a tax break, standing outside the building it got.
  • Stepping into the Pieterskerk knowing which grave belongs to the Pilgrims’ pastor and why part of his congregation sailed without him.
  • Being told which two of Leiden’s five museums fit your afternoon, and which to leave for another visit.

What the walk covers

  • Rembrandt’s birthplace, school and first studio
  • The Rapenburg, the Academy Building and why Leiden got a university in 1575
  • The Pilgrims’ Leiden: the Pieterskerk and the streets they lived in
  • Hofjes, the Burcht and the terraces locals actually use

Meeting point

At Leiden Centraal, city-centre exit, or at a central landmark, agreed by email.

Tailored to you

  • Pilgrim heritage: more time around the Pieterskerk and the Kloksteeg, and the museum if it is open
  • Rembrandt and Dutch painting: the birthplace, the Latin School, and what to see at the Lakenhal
  • Science and the university: Boerhaave, the observatory, the Hortus
  • Families: the Burcht, the canals by foot, and Naturalis afterwards

Worth it if

You want the Pilgrim, Rembrandt and university stories told in the streets where they happened, or you have two hours between trains and want them used well.

Not needed if

You enjoy self-guided museum days and do not mind reading plaques. Leiden is safe, flat and signposted.

Price

From €185 per private group of up to 4 for 2 hours; €20 per extra person up to 6. Three hours from €255. Train tickets, admissions and food are not included. You get a confirmed price by email before you decide.

Where we stand

Dutch City Tours started in 2026 and this walk has no reviews yet. We will not invent any. The guide is an independent local we arrange and name before you confirm. This is an enquiry, not a booking; nothing is charged until you have agreed.

Your guide

We arrange an independent local guide for each enquiry: a local guide who knows Leiden well, speaks good English and is good company. You are told who your guide is, by name, before you confirm anything.

Guide profiles will appear here once guides have agreed to be listed. We do not publish people who have not consented, and we do not invent them. Questions about a guide before you enquire: hello@dutchcitytours.com.

Questions people ask

Are museum tickets included?
No. The walk stays outside; your guide points you to the museum worth your afternoon. Admission is paid on the day.
Can the guide meet us at Schiphol or Amsterdam?
No. Guides live locally and meet you in Leiden; that is what keeps the price sensible. Leiden Centraal is about fifteen minutes from Schiphol and thirty-five from Amsterdam Centraal.
