Choose Haarlem if time is short or this is your first trip out of Amsterdam: fifteen minutes by train, a great church on a great square, two good museums, back for dinner. Choose Delft if you want the postcard and the history: an hour away, a canal town small enough to read as one picture, William of Orange and Vermeer. Delft is the better day; Haarlem the easier afternoon.
These two are often the shortlist for a first day trip because both are compact old towns with a famous painter and a market square. The difference is distance and contrast: Haarlem is Amsterdam’s neighbour, Delft is somewhere else.

Choose Haarlem if
- You have three hours
- You want the least planning possible
- Frans Hals and the Teylers interest you
- You may want the beach afterwards
Choose Delft if
- You want a town that looks nothing like Amsterdam
- Dutch royal history or Vermeer matter
- You can give it a full day, ideally with The Hague
- You want the photograph everyone takes
Doing both
Not the same day: they are in opposite directions. Do Haarlem on a light afternoon and Delft on a full day with The Hague.
