Haarlem is fifteen minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, the Grote Markt is a ten-minute walk from the station, and the great church, the Teylers and the Frans Hals Museum make a satisfying half day. It is the least “different” of the cities on this site, and the easiest.

Getting there
Trains run every few minutes from Amsterdam Centraal and take around fifteen minutes; there is no need to plan them. A second-class single was about €5–6 when checked in September 2026.
From Haarlem station walk south through the Kruisstraat and Barteljorisstraat to the Grote Markt. The Bavo, the city hall and the visitor centre are on the square; the Teylers and the windmill are five minutes east along the river; the Frans Hals Museum ten minutes south.
Pick the day: the Bavo is closed on Sundays, the museums on Mondays, and Saturday brings the big market and the crowds that come with it.

When to go and how long to stay
Tuesday to Friday for the quietest streets with everything open. Half a day is enough; a full day if you add the Frans Hals Museum and a hofje walk.

- Book the Corrie ten Boom House months ahead or leave it out.
- Combine with Leiden: about twenty minutes on by Intercity.
- Zandvoort beach is ten minutes further by train if the weather is good.
Skip Haarlem if you have one day trip and want something unlike Amsterdam. Rotterdam, Utrecht or The Hague give more contrast for the extra time.
