What having a local changes
Understand what you are looking at
Why Rotterdam looks nothing like the other six: the 1940 bombing erased the centre, and what stands there now is a deliberate argument about what a rebuilt city should be. How the port, the reconstruction and the modern skyline are one story rather than three.
See what you would walk past
The line marking the edge of the bombed area runs through the city and most visitors cross it without noticing. The older fragments that survived are easy to walk past when the new architecture is this loud.
Decide what is worth your time
Half of what a guide saves you is a ticket you did not need, or an hour spent on the wrong thing. In Rotterdam that usually means:
- Which architecture is genuinely essential and which is better seen from outside
- Whether the Cube House admission is worth it for your group
- Whether to spend the extra time on the Markthal, the riverfront or Kop van Zuid
- How to continue afterwards by metro, tram or water taxi
Rotterdam is spread out and the walk covers more ground than the compact cities. Your guide paces it for your group and confirms current opening before you commit to a ticket.
Leave with a plan for the rest of the day
The food halls, the riverside or the quarters away from the most visible tourist frontage, depending on whether you want quick, leisurely, or somewhere to sit with a drink. Rotterdam rewards being told where to go next more than most.

- Does the walk go inside the Depot or the Euromast?
- No; they are for your afternoon. Your guide ends the walk with a plan for them, and admissions are paid on the day.
- Does the walk include a water taxi ride?
- It can, at the boat’s fare, if you want the river as part of the two hours. Say so when you enquire.
