Day trips from Amsterdam under 30 minutes by train

Quick answer

Two cities on this site are under thirty minutes from Amsterdam Centraal: Haarlem at about fifteen minutes and Utrecht at about twenty-seven, both with trains every few minutes and no reservations. Leiden, at about thirty-five, is the next. If you want a whole different city for the price of a half day, Utrecht; if you want the least effort, Haarlem.

Haarlem, about 15 minutes

Trains every few minutes; the Grote Markt is ten minutes from the station. The Bavo, the Teylers Museum and quiet canals along the Spaarne. It is the most Amsterdam-like of the seven, which makes it easy and slightly less of a contrast. Half a day is enough; Saturday brings the big market.

Utrecht, about 27 minutes

Direct Intercity every ten minutes; the Dom is fifteen minutes on foot through the station’s shopping centre. Canals a storey below the street with cafés in the cellars, the tallest church tower in the country (book the climb), a lively student centre. It feels like a different city, not a suburb of Amsterdam.

Just over: Leiden, about 35 minutes

Worth the extra ten minutes if museums or Rembrandt matter to you, and quieter than either of the two above.

Making a half day of it

Leave after breakfast, be in the city by 10:00, and a two-hour private walk with a local guide ends at lunch with the afternoon still yours. For evenings, Utrecht and Haarlem both have terraces worth a late train back; museums will be shut, the cities will not.

Questions people ask

Is Zaandam or Zandvoort a day trip?
Zaandam (the Zaanse Schans windmills) and Zandvoort (beach) are both short trips from Amsterdam and Haarlem, but they are attractions rather than cities; this site covers cities with a historic centre and a station.
Do I need a reservation for these trains?
No. Tap in with a contactless bank card or buy an e-ticket in the NS app; prices are the same on the day.
