Dutch City Tours

Planning guide

Which Dutch cities deserve a full day?

Quick answer

Give a full day to Leiden (museums), The Hague (art, palaces, the sea) and Rotterdam (spread-out sights and the river). Delft is a long half day that becomes a full day with Royal Delft or the tower. Haarlem, Utrecht and Gouda are half days, which makes them good afternoons or good halves of a two-city day.

Full-day cities

  • Leiden: three hours on foot plus two museums; a museum lover could do two days
  • The Hague: the Mauritshuis and the Binnenhof area in the morning, then Scheveningen or the Peace Palace
  • Rotterdam: the Blaak cluster, the bridge, the river, the Depot and the Euromast are kilometres apart

Half-day cities, and what to add

  • Haarlem (15 minutes): add Zandvoort beach or Leiden
  • Utrecht (27 minutes): add Gouda on a Thursday or the Rietveld Schröder House
  • Gouda (50 minutes): add Utrecht or Rotterdam, each 20 minutes on
  • Delft (60 minutes): add The Hague and the Mauritshuis

How many day trips in a week

Three is comfortable on a five-night Amsterdam stay: one full-day city, one paired half-day, one wild card. More than that and Amsterdam itself gets short-changed. Pick by contrast: one old town, one modern city, one that surprises you.

Questions people ask

Which city is the best single day trip?
For a first visit, Delft plus The Hague. For contrast with Amsterdam, Rotterdam. For museums, Leiden. There is no single answer; see the day-trips comparison.
Can I do a city in the evening after a day in Amsterdam?
Utrecht and Haarlem, yes: both are lively in the evening and under half an hour away. Museums will be closed; the terraces will not.
