Rotterdam, for most families: water taxis on a real river, a 185-metre tower, a food hall under a painted ceiling and a show cube to climb through, all reachable by metro when legs give out. Gouda on a summer Thursday is the best small-town day (cheese market at 10:00, stroopwafels, one square). Haarlem is the shortest trip (15 minutes) with a windmill to climb, and Leiden has Naturalis, the national natural history museum, three minutes from the station.

- Rotterdam (60 min): water taxi, Euromast, Markthal, the Cube House you can walk through, the Maritime Museum harbour. Spread out, so use the metro; a full day.
- Gouda (50 min, Thursdays April–August): cheese market 10:00–12:30, the Waag museum, stroopwafels warm from the bakery. Half a day, then Utrecht or Rotterdam twenty minutes on.
- Haarlem (15 min): Molen De Adriaan windmill, the Grote Markt, ten-minute walks between everything. Half a day; add Zandvoort beach in summer.
- Leiden (35 min): Naturalis for dinosaurs and whales, the Burcht fort mound to climb (free), canals. A full day if the museum lands.
- Utrecht (27 min): the Miffy Museum is built for toddlers and pre-schoolers; the Dom Tower climb (465 steps, from about age six, booked ahead) for older children; the Railway Museum by its own train.
- Delft (60 min): the Nieuwe Kerk tower (376 steps) and Delft Blue painters at work at Royal Delft; otherwise a grown-up town.
- The Hague (50 min): the beach and pier at Scheveningen by tram; the museums are for adults, except Panorama Mesdag, which surprises everyone.
What to know before you go
Children under four travel free on NS trains; four to eleven can use a Railrunner day ticket for a few euros when accompanied by an adult. Check the current rules on ns.nl. Prams fit easily on Intercity trains; the older double-deckers have steps.
Museums close on Mondays almost everywhere; Rotterdam’s outdoor sights and Gouda’s market do not care. Sundays close the churches in Delft and Gouda and the Bavo in Haarlem.
With a guide, or without
A two-hour private walk works with children when the guide knows to keep stops short and to end at something to climb or eat. Say the ages when you enquire; the route changes with them. For toddlers, skip the guide and go to Gouda or the Miffy Museum.
